Summary/Abstract: The article analyses French loanwords (Gallicisms) identified in Volume I (A-G) of Słownik języka polskiego, edited by Jan Karłowicz, Adam Kryński, and Władysław Niedźwiedzki (hereinafter: The Warsaw Dictionary), and marked as 'Old Polish words' (†). The author: 1) presents data on the number of Gallicisms in Volume I; 2) discusses those marked by the editors as 'Old Polish'; and 3) juxtaposes these items with their counterparts in Słownik języka polskiego, edited by Witold Doroszewski - the first major dictionary of Polish published after The Warsaw Dictionary - in order to determine which terms were recorded there and how they were characterized. The analysis of these "Old Polish" Gallicisms demonstrates that the incorporation of foreign lexical items into Polish is a complex process. The material also illustrates the challenges faced by the editors of The Warsaw Dictionary, who pioneered the inclusion of etymological information in Polish lexicography, while also highlighting their achievements in this regard.
