Summary/Abstract: The Spanish-Polish Contrastive Grammar states, regarding the absolute superlative of adjectives, that its "scope of use seems to differ markedly in both languages". This contrast is not in doubt: Polish grammars generally lack the superlative elative/relative distinction traditionally present in Spanish sources. However, as the comparative analysis of the translation approach (the comparison of original texts and their translations) reveals, there are more functional equivalents of the elative superlative in Polish than one might suppose. The repertoire of possible equivalents for the suffixes -ísimo and -érrimo is not limited to "the few stereotyped formulas". The article attempts to defend the idea that the category of the absolute superlative does function in Polish and that its forms of expression can be identified thanks to the method that, using original texts and their translations, starts from the meaning of quality at the highest level of a scale, represented by the morphemes -ísimo and -érrimo.
