Summary/Abstract: Ghelderode’s “Le jardin malade” depicts a disintegration of reality leading to adenaturing strangeness of the world. The Ghelderodian fantastic imposes here thecontaminating, derealizing presence of an unthinkable that eludes comprehension andtestifies to a non-adaptation of being to the world. From the absolute otherness of the plantworld to teratological deformity, the very meaning of the fantastic "thing" is a monstrousthat should be seen as a set of imaginary representations exploring the limits of literaryfiguration, while opening up an epistemological breach in the natural order of things.
