Summary/Abstract: The European otter (Lutra lutra) is a “Near Threatened” species, playing a key role as an indicator of aquatic ecosystem health. This study assesses the otter population in the Călinești Oaș reservoir, part of the “Raul Tur” Site of Community Interest in northeast Satu Mare County, Romania. Field surveys were conducted between February and April 2023, using GPS to track and record otter presence through signs such as feces, footprints, and prey remains. Results indicate a stable population, with an estimated 4 to 7 otters inhabiting the area. The reservoir and surrounding floodplains provide essential year-round habitats. However, factors such as habitat degradation, water pollution, and human disturbances pose signifi-cant threats to the species. Conservation efforts are crucial to preserve this vulnerable population and its habitat.
