Summary/Abstract: This study examines the grammatical representation of the presumptive in the spirit of Georgi Gerdzhikov’s theory, which treats it as a bipropositional category reflecting the relationship between two predicative nuclei (or the circumstances surrounding them). Presumptive utterances, arising from the speaker’s incomplete knowledge, express a probabilistic relation between two opposing propositions, marking one as more credible (more probable).Building on the limited literature in Serbian linguistics, this study presents the first at-tempt to approach the topic within the context of Croatian. It explores the specific features of the presumptive in Serbian and Croatian with regard to its development, semantics, and paradigmatic and syntagmatic behaviour. The analysis compares these features with Bulgarian and situates them within a broader Balkan context, taking into account the particularities of the category in the languages of the Balkan Sprachbund.
