Summary/Abstract: The importance of literacy and education for freedom, emancipation, and peace in the world. This paper examines the critical role of literacy and education in promoting human freedom and peace. Drawing on historical examples from ancient civilizations, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and modern times, it explores how access to education can empower individuals, foster civic participation and strengthen social cohesion. We attempt at addressing the dark side of literacy as a tool of oppression, as shown by the Louisiana Literacy Test, which systematically proscribed African Americans. By means of historiographical discussion, the paper accentuates the emancipatory potential of education and the need of equitable access to learning with a view to sustain freedom and peaceful societies. Our conclusion replicates that literacy and education are not only fundamental human rights but also essential instruments for achieving justice, equality as well as peace in the long run.
