Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the literary oeuvre of Domenico Rea, one of the most significant Italian writers of the twentieth century, with particular emphasis on the reception of his work in Sweden. Proceeding from the author’s biographical and cultural ties to Naples, the study investigates the ways in which Rea, especially in Two Naples, re-evaluated stereotypical representations of Southern Italy and sought to portray its complex social and cultural reality. The research is grounded in a comparative analysis of sources in Italian, Swedish, and English, with the aim of elucidating the international reception of his work. Special attention is devoted to the recurring themes of social deprivation, moral crisis, and the dimension of the marvelous as structural constants of Rea’s literary universe, as well as to his distinctive language, which combines stylistic elegance with expressive immediacy. The objective of this study is to analyze how Domenico Rea, drawing upon the local context of Naples, achieved recognition within the international literary sphere, including the relatively limited Scandinavian context. The analysis demonstrates that the synthesis of local identity and universal thematic concerns enabled the positive reception of his work in Sweden, thereby confirming the importance of a transnational approach in literary studies.
