Summary/Abstract: Education, through its cultural and social role, has always been an essential pillar of a nation’s civilization. In order to outline the history of education in Tășnad, we must acknowledge its fundamental role in shaping the cultural and social identity of a community. Since its beginnings, the school has been not only a place of transmission of knowledge but also a bastion of culture, values and traditions. In Transylvania, the evolution of education has been profoundly influenced by the historical and political context, marked by the coexistence of different ethnic groups and religions. Approaching the beginnings of education in Tășnad is a difficult endeavor due to the lack of studies devoted to this issue, and especially the small number of preserved documents, the concerns for restoring the history of education in Tășnad materializing over time through various writings made by Petri Mor and Ioan Ardeleanu Senior. There are also several monographic notes about Tășnad, especially in the inter-war period, but also earlier, in which we can find information about the first educational institutions in Tășnad. Historia Domus of the Roman- Catholic church of Tășnad also offers valuable information about the Roman- Catholic confessional education in Tășnad. Although few in number, the records of the Greek- Catholic Schematismus give us some statistical data on the evolution of education in Romanian. The magazine Școala noastră, which appeared in Zalău during the interwar period, published a few articles write by some teachers from Tășnad. The article provides a detailed analysis of the evolution of education in Tășnad, emphasizing the role of confessional schools in the 18th-20th centuries. These schools – Roman-Catholic, Greek-Catholic, Reformed and Jewish – were of particular importance not only in the transmission of knowledge, but also in the preservation of ethnic and religious identity in a complex political and social context. The first mentions of education in Tășnad date back to 1544, and are associated with Luther’s Reformation and the opening of a confessional school. Over time, the development of schools was influenced by Austro-Hungarian legislation, such as the Ratio Educationis and the Apponyi Laws, which aimed at the centralization and later the Magyarization of education. After the Great Union of 1918, Romanian state education became a main instrument for promoting national culture and language. The reforms introduced during this period included free and compulsory education for all children, thus providing wider access to school. During the interwar period, the school in Tășnad stood out as an active educational center, dedicated not only to formal instruction, but also to the cultivation of a civic and national spirit among pupils and the community. School celebrations and extracurricular activities have played a significant role in strengthening national identity and promoting cultural values. Events such as December 1, the Day of the Unification of the Principalities, Heroes’ Day and other national holidays were occasions to celebrate unity and reaffirm the national spirit. These events, which included choral singing, recitations, skits, dances and folk games, were a way of cultivating respect for national traditions and history, while strengthening a sense of belonging. Deși puține, consemnările Șematismelor greco – catolice ne oferă cateva date statistice, despre evoluția invățămantului in limba romană. Revista Școala noastră, ce a apărut la Zalău in perioada interbelică, a publicat cateva articole scrise de invățători ai școlii tășnădene, completand informațiile regăsite in arhiva școlii. Thus, the history of education in Tășnad reflects not only the evolution of school institutions, but also the constant efforts of the community to preserve and promote its cultural identity in a historical context marked by changes and challenges.
