Summary/Abstract: Despite the fact that, in 1925, the Romanians from Bistriþa-Nãsãud county were not visibly involved in the founding of the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate, due to aspects related to the building of the Romanian Three Holy Hierarchs Cathedral in Bistriþa, their contribution to the event was notable. More specifically, the first Romanian patriarch, Miron Cristea, Metropolitan Nicolae Bãlan of Sibiu, and other important Orthodox cultural personalities from the interwar period were educated at the Nãsãud Border Gymnasium. The role played by professors like Archpriest Grigore Pletosu (1848–1934) was also very important. In this study we highlight his role and show how the aforementioned personalities contributed to the training of future Church leaders.
