Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the topography of the tomb of Husein-Captain Gradaščević in Istanbul, analysing its historical significance, spatial characteristics, and changes over time on the basis of direct field research. Husein-Captain Gradaščević was one of the most prominent military and political figures of late Ottoman Bosnia and a leading representative of the autonomous movement. However, despite the clear historiographical recognition of his historical role, the material trace of his burial site remained insufficiently researched for a long period, accompanied by vague and often contradictory information regarding its spatial and physical characteristics. Although the location of the tomb of Husein-Captain Gradaščević was identified in August 2025, the focus of this paper is not the act of identification itself, but rather a systematic topographical and spatial analysis of the tomb, based on the methods of direct field investigation. The research, conducted in late 2025, included an on-site examination of the location, precise geolocation, systematic measurement of the tombstones (nišani), analysis of the spatial and topographical context, as well as a comparison with historical photographs and written sources from the first half of the twentieth century. The results obtained are presented here for the first time in a scholarly framework, while the accompanying documentation had previously undergone official verification, thereby ensuring the formal and scientific credibility of the research. The aim of this study is to provide a topographical, spatial, and dimensional analysis of the tomb, to identify changes that have occurred over the past century, and to contribute to the methodology of field research on Ottoman funerary monuments, as well as to the study of the material memory of key figures in nineteenth-century Bosnian history.
