Summary/Abstract: The mahala (city quarter) of Zgošća in the Nahiyah of Visoko represents the precursor to today’s urban city of Kakanj, encompassing several smaller villages, which were divided into Donja Zgošća (Lower Zgošća) and Gornja Zgošća (Upper Zgošća). The sole surviving records detailing tax obligations in the Nahiyah of Visoko during the first half of the 19th century, including the taxpayer names, are found in tax registers (defter) that document tithe income (ushur) and other land levies specifically pertaining to the city quarter of Zgošća. A total of six census volumes are available in Gazi Husrev-bey’s library. These volumes are significant from various aspects, primarily because they represent historical records about the people who formed the core of the timar system. In this work, all six ledgers were consolidated and organized by Zgošća settlements. However, the detailed breakdown of individual payments in agricultural products was omitted due to its extensive volume. The general tax ledger for the Nahiyah of Visoko from 1851 and 1852 provides us with the names of individuals authorized to collect taxes and offers valuable insight into relevant statistical data on tax and agricultural activities during that time.
