Summary/Abstract: Freedom of Conscience in the Romanian Context: Between Historical Tensions, Theological Grounds, and Communal Responsibility. This study explores the concept of freedom of conscience and its manifestations within both secular and religious communities, emphasizing its historical, ethical, and social dimensions. By tracing the interactions between Church and State, it reveals how tensions and confrontations have shaped individual autonomy and collective responsibility. Historical episodes, including controversies over biblical translations, illustrate the complex interplay between religious influence and political authority, showing that genuine freedom emerges through negotiation, dialogue, and ethical accountability. The analysis further stresses that true freedom is not merely the absence of constraints but an active exercise of responsibility within relational and communal contexts. Religious communities, particularly evangelical movements, have played a significant role in fostering moral discernment, civic engagement, and pluralist dialogue, reinforcing the idea that freedom of conscience is indispensable to human dignity, education, democratic governance, and social cohesion.
