Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to examine the circumstances and potential for the integration of Eastern and South-Eastern European countries with the European Union (EU). The study outlines the official membership criteria alongside the political, economic, and institutional barriers in the countries seeking to become EU members. The research applies the systemic and comparative methods. The author compiles information regarding the progress of accession negotiations for the countries that have recently submitted applications for EU candidate status. The analysis includes: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Georgia, Moldova, North Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine, and Turkey. By employing qualitative comparative methods that incorporate quantitative elements, variations in the examined EU accession process were identified. The final conclusions were derived on the basis of the assumptions of systemic method. Based on this premise, insights were developed regarding the future of EU enlargement policy, considering both the internal and external challenges facing the European Union, including, but not limited to, geopolitical ramifications in the context of global competition, security, and the increasing impact of external entities.
