Summary/Abstract: Sustainable development in Europe, alongside security and resilience, is a value and a policy objective. It reflects social sensitivity, because it draws attention to environmental issues. Promoted by the UN and the EU, it also takes educational institutions into account. This article is focused on the issue of systemic and institutional transformation of higher education institutions in the European Education Area. The aim of the research is to understand the specificity and direction of evolution of universities in Austria, Germany and Switzerland under the influence of socio-cultural, political and sustainable development factors, and to propose recommendations for the further development of the academy. The analysis demonstrates that universities have been changing evolutionarily for decades under the influence of socio-political factors. Today, the dominant challenge is the greening of life and social awareness. Universities have an important role to play, but they must have an autonomy in research and development. The dominant research method in this study is a systemic and institutional approach, which at the EU level refers to the EU and the European social model. The institutional context has become apparent in two ways, namely through the prism of higher education institutions in German-speaking countries and the institutionalisation of EU sustainable development policy at the academic level.
