Summary/Abstract: Since 1991, independent Ukraine has been struggling with a significant outflow of population. This is mainly due to economic factors, including economic migration. The outbreak of the war in Donbas in 2014, and especially Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, caused millions more Ukrainians to leave the country. After 24 February 2022, Ukraine has lost more than 30% of its labour potential. Due to the mass departure of the population, Ukraine is experiencing an acute demographic crisis. The destruction of infrastructure, the deepening economic crisis and the security and higher standard of living in the West make many Ukrainians not want to return to the country. The demographic crisis in Ukraine, in turn, leads to a deepening economic crisis and reduces the chance for a quick post-war reconstruction of the country. Currently, however, the very survival of the Ukrainian state and economy depends on external financial support, which is uncertain.
