Feasting of the Gagauzes

Summary/Abstract: The article presents feasting at what have been referred to as periods of passage in man's life like birth, wedding and funeral. Attention has been paid to the most essential building elements of the cultural phenomenon (food, etiquette) during the traditional period and the changes that have occurred in our time. Serving as a basis has been the understanding that the feast is a culmination in the observance of a certain ritual or holiday and, by and large, brings together the family, kinship and settlement community. Proceeding from field studies and literary sources the author comes to the conclusion that the way of feasting of the Bulgarian Gagauzes is an integral part of the general Bulgarian manner of feasting, and is determined by their livelihood, way of life, religious affiliation, etc.
