Summary/Abstract: This contribution investigates the forms of survival and reinvention of Orlando furioso in contemporary Italian fiction, through the comparative analysis of three works that differ in genre and register: Il salto degli Orlandi (1998, 2007) by Marco Santagata, Canto le donne e i cavalieri: Romanzo punkabbestia (2005) by Leonardo Marini, and Il mio romanzo familiare: Le donne, i cavallier, l’arme, gli amori (2018) by Stella Bolaffi Benuzzi. Each of these rewritings confronts Ariosto’s legacy in different ways: Marini opts for a contemporary reinterpretation of the chivalric, bringing the Paladins into the marginal context of the punkabbestia; Santagata devizes a sophisticated metaliterary device in which Ariosto’s text is disassembled and reborn as a critical object and intertextual narrative; finally, Bolaffi Benuzzi transfers the code of the Furioso into a family memoir novel, recovering motifs and structures typical of the Renaissance epic in an affective and ironic key.
