Summary/Abstract: This paper demonstrates how the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Ecumenical Councils are presented in the old Serbian chronicles. Ecumenical councils are assemblies of bishops or their representatives from all parts of the Christian world, convened to make decisions regarding faith, doctrine, hierarchy, worship, and discipline. These are a fascinating group of narrative historical texts in which the content is shaped around specific dates. The three Ecumenical Councils were held in the 5th and 6th centuries, spanning a period of about 120 years. Serbian chroniclers provide information about the time the councils were held, their most significant participants, and the Christological issues discussed, which were of great concern to the Christian world at the time. An analysis of these historical sources showed that the content of the chronicle entries had varying levels of source reliability, as some information was entirely accurate, while other details were completely incorrect. The paper also discusses the origin of the sources used by Serbian chroniclers to compile the chronicle notes on individual Ecumenical Councils.
