Summary/Abstract: In the collections of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Special Intelligence Service, and the Royal House Miscellaneous collection of the National Archives, there are personal documents belonging to American aviators assigned to bomb targets in Romania in the summer of 1944 and shot down during their missions. Among these are letters to their families in which they recount life in southern Italy, where the airfields from which they took off were located, as well as accounts of combat missions and technical documents on how navigation was performed – the documents being in their translated form; then a report on the interrogation of Anglo-American prisoners and an article from the American magazine Collier’s, (November 1955), in which one of the former prisoners recounts, in largely laudatory terms, his stay in Romanian captivity. All these constitute valuable documents that complete our image of American aviators and their bombing missions over Romania during the tragic summer of 1944.
