Summary/Abstract: The lack of a national certification system in Bulgaria has been a significant obstacle for achieving sustainability in the construction sector. Without a structured framework, it is challenging to promote environmentally- friendly practices and ensure long-term benefits for both the society and the economy as a whole. To address this issue, extensive efforts and strategic planning are crucial to reshape and improve the construction industry in Bulgaria, making it eventually environmentally responsible while prioritizing public health and well-being. The introduction of the Bulgarian Ecological Standard for Three-Dimensional Construction (BEST) represents an important and necessary step towards bridging this gap. This new certification system is designed to evaluate and promote sustainable building practices by incorporating international standards and adopting them to the specific needs of the Bulgarian construction market. By focusing on key aspects such as energy efficiency, carbon footprint, water management, sustainable materials’ usage, comfort, well-being and economic effectiveness, BEST provides an efficient approach to certifying sustainable buildings in Bulgaria. The implementation of the system will encourage more investments in green projects, stimulate innovation in the construction and building sector, and eventually it will create healthier and more energy-efficient buildings for the population. Moreover, it will create clear guidelines for all stakeholders in the construction process and it will show them the potential pathways for creating a sustainable environment for all. In the long term, the creation and adoption of BEST will contribute to the transformation of Bulgaria’s built environment, aligning it with the European and global sustainability goals and enhancing the overall quality of life. By establishing a national certification system, Bulgaria is taking a proactive step towards a more sustainable, environmentally responsible, and future-oriented construction sector, ensuring that sustainability practices are embedded as fundamental principles in all future activities of the companies, located in Bulgaria.
