Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of the study is to present the results of a survey on the topic “How do Bulgarians recount the past?”. The analysis of the collected data reveals interesting tendencies related to the semantic characteristics of renarrative forms, in comparison with evidential and inferential grammatical constructions. The discussion examines how native speakers interpret the use of renarrative forms by a speaker who was, in fact, a witness to the reported event. The respondents’ views are presented regarding the ways in which a non-witnessed narrative can be constructed in contemporary Bulgarian. The obtained results may serve as an argument in support of the thesis that the terms renarrativity and non-witnessedness are not synonymous.
