Summary/Abstract: The present work aims to investigate the relationship between the development of public hygiene and the process of social modernization in Romania and Europe starting with the nineteenth century and continuing with the first half of the twentieth century and up to the present day. Public hygiene has become a central tool in health, urbanization and education policies, reflecting the transition from a traditional, rural society to an industrialized and urbanized one. The study looks at how hygiene has been integrated into social control strategies, the promotion of civilization and the formation of a healthy, productive and disciplined citizen. We set out to analyze the impact that health legislation has had, urban infrastructure and hygienic education in the construction of social modernity. The study is based on a historical-analytical methodology, for example we analyzed official documents: laws, sanitary regulations, health reports, medical articles from the time and present, works on the history of medicine, sociology, all analyzed from an interdisciplinary perspective: history, public health, sociology, urban anthropology. Starting from these desires, we proposed an incursion into time in order to analyze these public hygiene problems on the background of which modern Romania was forged with sanitary laws current at the time and institutions created specifically to supervise public health.
