Summary/Abstract: Maps of Hungary’s vineyards reveal extensive viticultural areas surrounding Lake Balaton. Of the country’s twenty-four wine regions, four are located around the lake: Balatonfüred–Csopak, Balatonfelvidék (Balaton Uplands), Badacsony, and Balatonboglár. While these regions share broadly similar climatic conditions, they differ markedly in other environmental characteristics. Their geological substrates include red sandstone, limestone, basalt, and sandy formations, upon which diverse soil types – such as red and brown forest soils, basalt tuff, and sand – have developed. This geological diversity has long supported a wide range of grape varieties, selected and refined through centuries of viticultural practice. The study surveys the evolution of grape cultivation and wine culture from the Roman period to the present, examining each of the four wine regions individually.
