Summary/Abstract: The Sopron Wine Region is one of Hungary’s four major red wine-producing areas, distinguished by a terroir that sets it markedly apart from the others. This complex interplay of natural and social factors shapes the distinctive identity and local character of Sopron wines. Owing to the region’s cooler climate, these wines are typically characterised by pronounced acidity and freshness. The history of Sopron, together with its system of designation-of-origin protection, clearly reflects the region’s capacity to adapt to changing conditions. The prominent role of Blaufränkisch (Kékfrankos) and Grüner Veltliner in the varietal structure underscores the close historical and professional ties between the region and Austria. Although the Sopron Wine Region produces red wines of considerable quality, its recognition and market reputation still lag behind those of other Hungarian red wine regions. Owing to its distinctive natural endowments and social environment, wine production in Sopron has historically diverged, and continues to diverge, from the dominant trends of Hungarian red winemaking, giving the region a unique place within Hungary’s wine geography.
