Summary/Abstract: The knower distinguishes between the two fundamental aspects of the word: one is the substratum—the cause of the word—and the other is linked to the meaning of the word. That through which meaning acquires a support, through which it is superimposed upon the proper form of the word and thereby becomes identified with it, that is the fundamental element of the word. Thus teaches the Saṅgraha. According to the anti‑etymological theory, that which bears meaning—the signifier—is the fundamental element (upādāna). But according to the etymological theory, the cause, the support of meaning (nimittam), is what makes possible the etymological analysis of the word. Others say that the fundamental element is the indicator (dyotaka), for it is this element, through its capacity to signify, that makes possible the relation between [meaning and word].
