Summary/Abstract: Joseph Roth’s work participates in the significant experience of contingency and the problem of how it can be managed; an experience shaping the literature of classical or reflective modernism in the 1910s and 1920s as a result of the Great War. Roth reflects on the loss of structures of meaning by turning to the semiotic nature of the world. His apparent return to inherited, ›traditional‹ narrative models and genres is undermined by his narrative discourse, which gives rise to strategies of ambiguity and questioning what has been told.
