Ectogenesis – an Important Field of Concern Within the Transhumanist Project

Summary/Abstract: Since the 1960s, opportunities for women and men to manage, limit, prolong, or enhance fertility have increased dramatically through methods such as contraception, in vitro fertilization (IVF), biobanking, and other strategies to reorganize assisted human reproduction. Full ectogenesis as a complete outsourcing of human reproduction, by bypassing the bodily processes of gestation and birth, can be considered the culmination of genetic and reproductive technologies. Despite being to this day a hypothetical scenario, it has been discussed for decades as the ultimate means of freeing women from their reproductive burdens in society and thus ending fundamental gender injustices. In this paper, we will try to identify the place of ectogenesis in the process of transforming human reproduction, but also to analyze ectogenesis as a special form of human enhancement and expansion of medical practices, which goes beyond the traditional field of medicine. We will also examine the anthropological consequences in regard to a posthuman future of a project as bold and risky as ectogenesis.
