Artificial Intelligence and the Problem of Consciousness. A Theological Discernment of a Contemporary Challenge

Summary/Abstract: In the context of accelerating technological progress, increasing fears have emerged concerning artificial intelligence – more specifically, the possibility that it might compete with human beings by developing consciousness and seeking to undermine human nature. This study aims to analyze the issue from a theological perspective and to assess whether such fears are justified. The analysis begins with a general presentation of artificial intelligence and its functioning, continues with a reflection on consciousness as an ontological reality and divine gift, and proceeds to a critical evaluation of the possibility that machines could transcend mere data processing and acquire personal dimensions.
