Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to compare the geographical distribution of dialectal terms denoting the pine (Pinus) with the distribution of non-settlement names from Bohemia which include these terms. Built on a corpus of 1,747 pine-related non-settlement names, the research has revealed the presence of the three main dialectal words denoting the pine previously documented by dialect research in anoikonymy. The names includ¬ing the term borovice (or its variants and derivatives) are most frequent, occurring in central, eastern and north-eastern Bohemia. The names which contain the word sos¬na (or its derivatives) are found in the southern half of Bohemia, names originating from the appellative chvůje (or its variants and derivatives) are documented in west¬ern Bohemia. The non-settlement names confirm the findings of dialect research to a great degree; however, they also reveal the earlier situation which is characterised by originally wider distribution of the lexemes sosna (towards the north) and chvůje (towards the east and south-west). In some areas, these terms have been documented only in anoikonymy. The research confirms a gradual withdrawal of these dialectal words from use and their substitution by the “more aggressive” appellative borovice, supported by its existence in standard Czech.
