Summary/Abstract: The goal of the paper is to analyze the reflection of street name changes in the city of Miskolc (Hungary) during the period 1989–1993. The study is based on qualitative content analysis of texts – specifically, letters and opinions of newspaper readers – published in the regional newspaper Észak-Magyarország in the period. These texts address various aspects of the renaming process, including ideological, symbolic, and practical considerations. The analysis reveals that genuine public debate, char¬acterized by multiple contributions on a single topic, was relatively rare. Most arti¬cles and letters reflected the individual viewpoints of their authors and did not gen¬erate further discussion or responses. The examined texts illustrate various aspects of the street renaming process, from criticisms directed at specific new street names to philosophical questions about the nature of naming. Some authors perceived new names as a manifestation of Hungarian integration with Europe or as a symbol of a post-Socialist era. Many texts highlighted the need for thorough consideration of changes in street names, and many authors were aware of the financial or practical aspects of renaming.
