Summary/Abstract: This article aims to discuss some of the benefits that reading literary works – especially fiction and poetry – can bring to the spiritual growth of readers. However, it will not focus on virtues explicitly cultivated in literature, such as sacrifice, love for others, justice, gentleness, wisdom, or similar traits. Instead, it will explore less obvious virtues or contexts like: the pleasure of reading, fictional truth, the relationships nurtured through literature, play as a meeting place between the sacred and writing, the training ground of moral discernment, and the broadening of one’s world. I decided that the main guide in this journey to be “Letter of His Holiness Pope Francis on the Role of Literature in Spiritual Formation”, written less than a year before the Sovereign Pontiff passed into eternal life.
