Summary/Abstract: The study addresses the commemorative motive, tracing its origins and examining how it has been redefined. It aims to present this motive from a new interdisciplinary perspective, inspired by current trends in social geography and anthropology (e.g., the critical turn, memory studies). The key question discussed in the text is the role of commemoration in the background of proper names, perceived as expressions of honour – primarily for individuals. The outcome of this revision is then proposed to be applied to the relational model of proper names, where commemorative place names, traditionally classified under model D (whose – i.e., possessiveness or so-called false possessiveness), are reclassified under model C (what kind, under what circumstances), more precisely its subtype C2 (under what circumstances).
