Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the toponymic traces of Moravian and Czech settlers in Hungary. Firstly, it provides a brief overview of the historical relations between Moravians, Czechs and Hungarians in a Central European context, emphasising the mutual po¬litical, social, economic and cultural influences. Secondly, the ethnonyms used in medieval Hungary for the West Slavic ethnic groups inhabiting the Moravian and Bohemian regions are explained (e.g., Medieval Latin in Hungary: Bohemi or Boemi ‘peoples living in Bohemia and Moravia’, the Hungarian ethnonyms marót, maróc, marác, morva, all ‘Moravian’, and cseh ‘Czech’). Thirdly, the occurrence of the latter lexemes in Hungarian historical settlement names is observed, with regard to the structural diversity and the modern equivalents of the relevant name forms. Special atten¬tion is paid to settlement names that were transferred from Moravia and Bohemia. Furthermore, several contemporary microtoponyms that preserve the memory of the former ethnic Czech inhabitants are examined. References to demographic and social history behind the development of the observed place names are given, if known or deducible, and interdisciplinary conclusions are drawn accordingly.
