Summary/Abstract: The article compares and confronts various types of medieval settlement names in Hungary and in England. Since the strong influence of Christian religion lead to spread of place names referring to the church in both countries, a question of their semantic differences emerges. To what extent are the place names referring to the presence and characteristic of the sacral building or its consecration patron similar or different and how is the (former) proprietary relationship of the clergyman or the bilingual church code projected in the formation of place names? An analysis of the typological traits of place names will help us explain the analogies and differences between the two medieval nations by means of the use of a common cultural criterion. The analysed toponyms come from historical geographical materials, toponymic lexicons and scientific literature.
