Summary/Abstract: This article examines the commemoration of the departed within the Midnight Office, a liturgical practice of the Orthodox Church, with particular focus on its historical development and evolution. In the structure of the Midnight Office, a section dedicated to the dead includes troparia, psalms, and a diptych-type prayer. The roots of this tradition can be traced to the 11th-century monastic communities surrounding the Byzantine capital. A study of early manuscripts reveals various forms of this practice, and a comparative analysis highlights both its remarkable stability and its gradual development within the framework of daily monastic services.
