Summary/Abstract: The disease concept of addiction reveals to us that addiction or dependence is a physical, mental, social and spiritual disease with specific symptoms on all four planes. This concept can be found in the specialized vocabulary, as the forms of addiction can be diagnosed and described in medical terms, emphasizing at the same time the need for the intervention of both specialists (doctor, priest, psychologist, addiction counselor) and non-specialists (family, friends, colleagues, community). For a long time, addicted people were stigmatized as sinful people, lacking in will and character, but this approach did not bring any change in their lives, quite the opposite. By knowing and understanding the disease concept of addiction (which also includes that of spiritual disease or passion), we have the opportunity to fully understand its deep causes, stages and specific symptoms, applying a holistic recovery model, according to the Christian vision of man.
