Summary/Abstract: This study is devoted to analysing emotive vocabulary of Slavic origin in the folk ballad “Balada Meșterului Manole”. This choice is motivated by the fact that at the time of its earliest recording, the influence of the Slavic languages – particularly Old Bulgarian and Middle Bulgarian – on the Romanian language was especially strong and perceptible. The study supplements and enriches earlier research on the topic with illustrative material and is of particular value as it is among the first analyses of Slavic lexical elements in the Romanian language based on a literary corpus. The analysis of the selected lexemes is carried out through the application of a diachronic method aimed at tracing and clarifying their etymology, as well as a synchronic method, which makes it possible to examine their semantic development in contemporary Romanian. The analysis suggests that the lexemes under consideration are early Slavic borrowings (6th–12th centuries) whose semantics developed considerably later, after their penetration into Pre-Romanian. The etymological parallels indicate that the borrowing occurred through the mediation of Old Bulgarian.
