Etymological and semantic facets of the words for shame in the Balkan languages

Summary/Abstract: This article examines the etymology and semantics of the words used to describe shame in Bulgarian, Romanian, Albanian and Greek. After the interpretive definition of the word in each of the Balkan languages, the existing etymological theories in linguistic science are systematized. Some of them have been analyzed with a view to Indo-European phonetics, and new hypotheses have been proposed for others. The focus of the study is the semantic development of words for shame in the languages of the Balkan Linguistic Union. On the basis of the analyses carried out, three main semantic models were derived, characteristic not only of the Balkan languages, but also of some languages that are external to the Bal- kans: mixing emotions - suffering, pain, horror > shame; ‘turn around, turn away, hide’ > ‘be ashamed, worry’ and ‘pink, red, ruddy’ > ‘ashamed’.
