Summary/Abstract: This article examines the problem of the implicit subject of the infinitive in contemporary Italian, focusing on cases where the syntax of the sentence is insufficient for its unambiguous interpretation. After reviewing the normative grammatical requirements for the use of the infinitive in the subordinate clause with an implicit subject in Italian, specific examples from contemporary Italian literary prose are presented and discussed. Even when the syntax unambiguously determines the subject of the infinitive, the extended context and textual cues can create a sense of another subject, which influences the perception of the action and the psychological perspective. An approach is proposed for analyzing and interpreting the contextual and pragmatic factors that cause this problematic reading of the subject, examining how the anaphoric chain and the referential devices in the text lead to the perception of a "contextually restored" subject.
