THE STRUCTURE AND HEAD DETERMINATION OF NN CONSTRUCTIONS IN BULGARIAN AND ALBANIAN

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to clarify the syntactic structure and principles of head determination of NN constructions in Bulgarian and Albanian. The analysis assumes that the different interpretations of these constructions – quantitative and container-related – depend on the degree of lexicality of the first nominal (N1). Data from the two Balkan languages, both part of the Balkan Sprachbund, provide empirical support for the monoprojectional approach. The study argues that the different interpretations of pseudo-partitive constructions are due to different functional structures, rather than competing syntactic derivations.
