Summary/Abstract: Between 1867 and 1918, during the Austro-Hungarian Dualism, demographic policy played a central role in the efforts of the Hungarian authorities to strengthen political and administrative control over Transylvania. Alba de Jos County, with a predominantly Romanian population, was particularly affected by these policies. The Hungarian government implemented measures aimed at altering the ethnic composition through colonization programs and administrative reorganization, as well as through the cultural assimilation of non-Hungarian populations. These policies not only sought to reduce the numerical dominance of Romanians but also to suppress their cultural and national identity by promoting the Hungarian language in schools, public institutions, and governance. This paper aims to examine the multifaceted effects of these demographic strategies on the social, cultural, and political landscape of Alba de Jos County.
