Crosses and Roadside crosses in Dobrogea. Case Study: the towns of Dunărea, Capidava, and Topalu (Constanța County)

Summary/Abstract: The ethnographic research carried out in the three villages discussed in this study - Topalu, Capidava and Dunărea, focused on identifying boat-manufacturing carpenters who are still in activity in this region, for possible cooperation with them during the workshops organized in the ASTRA Museum in Sibiu, regarding information related to gastronomy, shepherding, or various cultural activities specific to the “Lipoveni” ethnic groups. Although the tradition of building roadside crosses may not be as widespread in this region as compared to other ethnographic areas, this occasion also facilitated a study of these monuments of spiritual culture. This study will present a repertory of such roadside crosses, whose architecture, as will be apparent, corresponds typologically with that observed in the South Transylvanian monuments.
