Summary/Abstract: Our body is a concrete reality that we might treat as an object of study or as a subject for reflection, as an ordinary thing among others, as it is treated by the medical science, however, at the same time, it constitutes our integration in the visible, tangible world, which precedes all the others. The same body, which asks itself questions about its own self, is included in the question regarding it: the human subject that has a body is, at the same time, the one that asks and the one who is asked, the content and the vessel that contains it. This is why we cannot reveal and understand its mystery in a complete way. Our body is a sort of a pivot of an unceasing oscillation between match and mismatch, between mystery and problem, between to be and to have. We sometimes say that “we are bodies”, fusing with the body to the extent of identification with it, when it offers us a fluid access to the world and its corporality, other times we say “we have a body” when exhaustion manifests a bizarre resistance to our will. The present study aims at offering a reading of the episode of the healing of the paralytic man at Bethesda (John, chapter 5) from a perspective which is not very much approached, reflected in the curious question which Christ the Saviour asks the man: “Wilt thou be made whole?” (Jn 5, 6).
