Summary/Abstract: The article is concerned with first edition of Promised Land by Władysław Stanisław Reymont as a serial in two journals: “Kurier Codzienny” in Warsaw and “Nowa Reforma” in Kraków between 1897 and 1898. What I seek to investigate is possible mutual connections between ideas crucial for the novel and the problems discussed in one or both newspapers (urban space in Łódź, Polish-Jewish relations, laborers’ conditions). Content of the journals may be considered as a sort of introduction or commentary on the literary work. Sometimes the opposite: it is a novel that critically refers to what a reader could usually find in paper columns. I attempt then to reconstruct the possible conditions of Promised Land’s original reading. As a novel published in newspaper it was not only a separate narrative, but also a part of the journal’s broader offering. I also aim to precise key differences between “Kurier” and “Nowa Reforma” and ask how they could have influenced the reception of Reymont’s novel.
