Summary/Abstract: The contemporary digital environment, characterized by information oversaturation, multimodal forms of representation, and algorithmic mechanisms of distribution, fundamentally transforms the nature of media reception. Media literacy cannot be reduced to technical-operational skills or basic media orientation. In the digital environment, it needs to be understood as a complex competence that includes the ability to interpret, create and critically reflect on media meanings in social, cultural and technological contexts. At the centre of this transformation lies interpretive competence – the individual’s ability to actively construct, decode, assess, and modify meanings across diverse communicative and media contexts. The aim of this theoretical study is to examine the relationship between media literacy and interpretive competence through the analysis of contemporary conceptual frameworks. The study argues that without well-developed interpretive competence, media literacy risks becoming superficial and vulnerable to manipulation, whereas its strengthening can foster higher levels of critical civic participation in a post-truth information environment.
