Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to Władysław Reymont’s short story Z pamiętnika [From the Diary] (1903). It shows the way in which the writer uses satire and ironic distance to criticize the social attitude, identified with “being a philistine”. Drawing a picture of a petty-bourgeois family, the writer showed philistinism as an ideological way of being, in which the protagonists’ self-creation plays an important role thanks to the co-creation of notes included in the eponymous diary. The formula of non-fictional literature used by Reymont allows us to reveal the motivations of subsequent people and the contradictions of their behavior with the declared ideas.
