Summary/Abstract: The life and work of Jesuit Father Emil Krapka, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year, shows that every specific situation of the Church is a challenge for theological reflection. He began his formation in relatively free times, but at the age of twenty-five, political changes plunged him and the entire Church in Slovakia into a difficult period of atheization and persecution, in which many succumbed to the temptation that nothing could be done, convinced it was necessary to wait for better times when the necessary resources would be available. The fact is that for the Church and theology, there have never been, are not now, and will never be times and places without problems; it is precisely the actual problems that always present a new challenge. Father Emil Krapka did not wait for better times; he developed theology during the period of the harshest persecution of the Church in Slovakia. He listened to the word of God and the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, from which he drew constant inspiration. According to him, every specific situation of the Church here, in this place and at this moment, is above all a mystery of God, a Passover of the Lord. Whether caused, brought about, used, or abused through any intervention, it always carries within itself, first and foremost, the mystery of God aimed at our salvation. The actual, specific situation of the Church is for each of us today and at any time in the future a place of encounter with God in the development of theology here and now.
