Summary/Abstract: In this article, I have attempted to reconstruct selected threads of Professor Tadeusz Lewowicki's pedagogical thought that make up the vision of the theory and practice of a democratic school, a school that, as the Professor emphasizes, is an integral part of social life and, in its essence, a space for the development of the human-citizen. In the pedagogical discourse on the preparation of children and adolescents for life in a democratic state, the Professor embedded his vision of education in the paradigm of subjective education. In this paradigm, the key role of education is understood not only as the transmission of knowledge, but primarily as a process of developing students' independence. In turn, by promoting cooperation between students, teachers and parents and creating a common educational environment, the space necessary for the formation of students' life skills, including the competencies needed for life in civil society, is formed. Looking at the condition of school education from the perspective of almost three decades and taking into account the global socio-cultural context, the question arises: in what direction are the changes taking place at school? Seeking an answer to this question, the main trends of global culture were characterized, which I then related to school educational issues.
