Social practice in the field of intercultural education – building a local forum for cooperation in the Polish and Czech parts of Cieszyn Silesia

Summary/Abstract: In the context of the development of the pedagogical subdiscipline of intercultural pedagogy, the mission of the Cieszyn scientific community has become to propagate a kind of philosophy that boils down to better understanding one's own existence, shaping a positive attitude towards other people, coexistence, peaceful exchange, unity, as well as the use and application in social practice of scientific theories proper to intercultural pedagogy, explaining and interpreting various fragments of reality. The article presents activities in the above-mentioned scope, conducted in 2012-2022 by academic staff of one of the teams functioning at the Cieszyn faculty of the University of Silesia in Katowice. The described project "Activation of individuals, groups and communities in the local environment" included a series of ten scientific meetings, related workshops for learners, university students and seniors from Poland, as well as learners from schools with Polish as the teaching language in the Czech Republic and other educational and cultural events. The implementation of the project has sparked discussions between various entities on the solution of theoretical and practical problems in the field of intercultural education. Actions were taken for integration and cooperation of the scientific community with local government units, institutions, non-governmental organizations of the Cieszyn county. Scientific, educational and methodological cooperation was deepened with schools in the Cieszyn county and with schools with Polish as the teaching language in the Czech Republic. An important area of activity was to strengthen the potential of the region and the competences of the academic staff of the University of Silesia and employees of the local government administration of Cieszyn, related to improving the implementation of tasks in cooperation with the socio-economic environment. The involvement of educational, cultural, local government institutions, non-governmental organizations in activities in the field of intercultural education has strengthened the processes of social integration and contributed to increasing the civic activity of residents of the Polish-Czech borderland. Both the project structure itself and the distribution of its results has allowed for achieving the regional and international scope of the project.
