Summary/Abstract: The manuscripts which we intend to introduce were collected by the late professor Gh. Pavelescu during the autumn of 1953 and spring of 1955 from Sebeșul de Jos, a village where he worked as a Romanian teacher. Gh. Pavelescu had arrived in this village after his dismissal from the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania and after his exclusion from his teaching position, following the dissolution of the Department of Ethnography and Folklore at the University of Cluj, where he held the post of lecturer. During his years in Sebeșul de Jos (1952-1955), he began experiencing „two decades of withdrawal into folklore”, namely a return to his „origin”, at the status of simply being a folklore collector. He will cross dozens of villages in Olt Country and, later, in Mărginimea Sibiului, collecting folklore. The manuscript, entitled Folklore from Sebeșul de Jos, dated 19.IV.1955, also includes some materials collected during the autumn of 1953. The manuscript contains popular ballads, Romanian folk songs, riddles and satirical extempore verses. The collecting method is a scientific one, indicating the name of the informer, sometimes including his nickname, his address, the collecting date and folklore collector’s name. The manuscript belongs to the folklorists and ethnographers Association of Sibiu County and will be published.
